Periodontal disease forms pockets around teeth as supporting tissue and bone is destroyed. If left untreated, these pockets will become deeper, allowing bacteria to accumulate and advance underneath the gum tissue, where they will cause additional bone and tissue loss.
For patients who are suffering from advanced periodontal disease that has resulted in bone and tissue loss, we offer flap surgery. Flap surgery is a dental procedure that removes the tartar deposits and reduces the gum pockets, allowing you to more easily keep the area clean and healthy. The surgery involves lifting the gums, removing all tartar, and repairing damaged bone (if needed). The bone may also be smoothed or reshaped so that there are fewer places for plaque to grow. Following your repairs and cleaning, the gums are surgically replaced so that the tissue fits securely around the tooth again.
