The center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) just launched a TV ad and video campaign educating the public on the link between smoking and periodontal disease. (1)Besides causing stained teeth and bad breath, tobacco smoking is a risk factor for periodontal disease. Smoking interferes with the ability of the body’s immune system to fight the bacteria linked with periodontal disease. Smoking related periodontal disease is associated with the destruction of the supporting structures of the teeth leading to bone loss. A review of literature reveals evidence that smokers have more extensive bone loss and tooth loss than non smokers. (2)
